About the tape test
The U.S. Navy circumference method estimates body-fat percentage from a few tape measurements instead of calipers or a scan. Men use height, neck, and waist; women add hip circumference. It is the same approach used for military body-composition screening — quick, repeatable, and free.
Measuring accurately
Measure relaxed, first thing in the morning, without pulling the tape tight or sucking in. Take neck below the larynx, waist at the navel, hips at the widest point. Because technique varies, the most useful signal is the trend across several weeks, not a single number.
Estimate only. Circumference methods carry a margin of error and are not a substitute for DEXA or clinical assessment. Not medical advice.
